In 1988 a friend introduced Gerry Blankenship to Joe Valasek who had a carving business in Newberg, Oregon. Joe was looking to hire someone with artistic ability that could be trained to carve and finish wood signs.

Joe was getting more work than he could handle so, he took a look at Gerry's portfolio and gave him a chance. Gerry happily took the opportunity to be joe's apprentice as it combined his love of art with the handcrafted skill of carving wood signs. For 28 years, Gerry created,  signs that compliment the beauty of the Northwest.  .

In 2017 Northwood Signs was passed down to Jerome Blankenship, Gerry's son, who has been working alongside his dad since he could hold a paint brush.
